Environmental Sustainability & Climate Change
The importance of dredging extends beyond economic reasons; it is also crucial for mitigating the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels, increased rainfall variability, and more frequent storm surges pose significant risks to Bangladesh’s river and coastal systems. Dredging helps mitigate these risks by improving drainage capacity, stabilizing riverbanks, and preventing inland flooding.
BCSDOA encourages its members to adopt eco-friendly dredging practices, including the use of hydraulic dredging and sediment management systems that minimize ecological disruption.
Research from Dhaka University emphasizes that sustainable dredging, when combined with riverbank afforestation, can significantly reduce flood risks and improve biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems.
climate resilience
Dredging is a key component of the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100, which aims to make the country more resilient to climate change. By improving water flow and reducing the risk of flooding, dredging helps safeguard millions of livelihoods in agriculture, fisheries, and urban areas.
